James Landreneau, a key component on the McNeese Cowgirls’ softball coaching staff the past four years, was named the program’s new head coach in June to succeed Joanna Hardin who accepted the head coaching job at the University of Virginia.
“First, I want to thank President Williams and Mr. Hemphill for trusting in me and giving me this opportunity,” said Landreneau who has been the Cowgirls’ hitting coach and recruiting coordinator since 2013. “I also want to thank Coach (Mike) Smith and Coach (Joanna) Hardin for having faith in me.
“I am humbled and honored for the opportunity to be the next leader of this great program. We have an incredible group of talented and high character young ladies returning with a promising athletic freshman class coming in.”
Katie Roux, the Cowgirls’ starting shortstop from 2011-14, was named assistant coach this May. Roux helped McNeese to back-to-back regular season Southland Conference titles in 2013 and 2014 and advance to the Southland Conference Tournament all four years. Roux was recruited and played one season for Natalie Poole who is the head coach at Memphis. Roux completed her playing career at McNeese under Mike Smith, now the head coach at Ole Miss.
While at McNeese, Roux was the Cowgirls’ second baseman as a freshman where she was named to the Southland Conference and All-Louisiana honorable mention teams in 2011 and the SLC all-tournament team in 2012. She then moved to shortstop where she held down the starting position for the next three years.
The native of Denham Springs, Louisiana, was a member of the Southland Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll throughout her collegiate career and was named an NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete and the SASOL Student Athlete of the season in 2013. Roux was also a three time Southland Conference All-Academic selection and a member of the 2014 Capital One Academic All-District team.
