Leopards place seven on Patriot League Academic Honor Roll

The Lafayette softball team placed seven of its student-athletes on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, announced Monday afternoon. The group consisted of four seniors and three sophomores and the team boasted an overall grade-point average (GPA) of 3.07.

Senior Emma Kline led the group with her 3.82 GPA. The International Affairs and German double major received the Foreign Languages and Literature Department's Outstanding Senior Award in May.

Classmates Sara Bussiere (Government and Law), Robyn Matchett (Government and Law) and Amanda Parker (Economics and Business and Art) joined Kline on the list. In May, Bussiere completed her thesis entitled "Great Britain as a Changing Nation State and Its Precarious Relationship with the European Nation." Matchett, meanwhile, spent the January interim session with Greenbaum and Orecchio, Inc., a wealth management firm, in New Jersey

Sophomores Kristin Garganio (Chemistry), Ali Henry (English and Art) and Christine Hilcken (Psychology and Government and Law) were also recognized. Hilcken completed a law externship in Easton during January.

The Leopards advanced to the Patriot League Championship series for the second straight season and senior Christina Giambrone was named the 2009 Patriot League Softball Player of the Year.

To be eligible for the Academic Honor Roll, a student-athlete must earn a 3.20 GPA in the spring semester and be awarded a varsity letter in one of the Patriot League's 16 winter or spring championship sports. The criteria for awarding varsity letters differs at each institution.

Jaime Wallin

Head Coach: Lafayette College

Jaime Wallin has been named the new head coach of the Lafayette softball team. Wallin joins the Leopards following a four year stint as the head softball coach at Sonoma State University (Calif.).

This past spring, Wallin guided Sonoma State to its first winning season in nine years. Under Wallin, the Seawolves made two trips to the NCAA Division II postseason (2007, 2009) and recorded their first three postseason victories in program history. Wallin coached one California Collegiate Athletic Association Pitcher of the Year as well as one Newcomer of the Year and five all-region players. She picked up her 100th career victory in April 2009.

Prior to her tenure at Sonoma State, Wallin was the assistant softball coach at Stony Brook (SUNY) for two years and was named the Stony Brook Female Assistant Coach of the Year in 2004.

Wallin began her coaching career as a student assistant coach at Queens College from 1999-2000 before spending three years as an assistant coach at the University of California-Davis (2000-03).

Wallin played collegiate softball at Pace University and Queens College. She was a 1997 all-conference selection at Pace and was a two-time all-conference player at second and third base while at Queens. The Knights captured the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference championship during Wallin's senior campaign.

"I feel very fortunate to receive the opportunity to serve as head softball coach at Lafayette College," Wallin said. "The campus community and athletic department are very welcoming and supportive. The softball program made great strides in the last four years and I look forward to playing a role in its continual growth."

She graduated from Queens in 1999 with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with concentrations in Exercise Science and Psychology. Wallin went on to earn her Master's Degree in Kinesiology with a concentration in Sport Performance from California State University in 2003.

A. The earlier the better! The younger you can get started to be fundamentally sound the better. It's also great to have the College Softball Coaches know who you are when you are 10 and then they see you again at 16 and say, I remember that girl. Man, she can really play.
