St. John's Softball Puts Service Before Selves

Community service continues to be a cornerstone value of the St. John's softball program. The Red Storm serves the sick and less fortunate in neighboring areas and participates in numerous charitable donation drives and fundraisers.

St. John's softball players understand the importance serving others through interaction. During the 2009-10 school year, members of the Red Storm participated in a Midnight Run preparing and delivering meals and clothing for the poor in New York. Working with the Queens Friendly Visitor Program, players spent time interacting with Alzheimer patients and performing household chores for the elderly. The entire team celebrated Halloween at St. Mary's Children's Hospital (Bayside, N.Y.) with young patients whose medical conditions prevented them from leaving the hospital for Halloween festivities. The Red Storm also dedicated their time to serving those in need at a local Ronald McDonald House and St. Nick's Men's Shelter in Queens.

The Red Storm is also active in charitable fundraising events. Last year, the St. John's softball team took part in a Soles4Soles shoe drive, donating shoes for those less fortunate around the world. The team also participated in the Eighth Annual STJ Campus Breast Cancer Awareness Fun Run and the Fun Run for Breast Cancer, sponsored by the Red Storm women's cross country team.

"Giving back to the community is a great experience and knowing that you have at least helped one person is a great feeling," - junior Julia Sanchez.

Under Kvilhaug, St. John's has had a BIG EAST tournament appearance in 2009, six All-BIG EAST Team honorees and 39 BIG EAST All-Academic Team selections. Before joining St. John's, Kvilhaug was the head coach at Radford University. In 2006, she led Radford to its first 40-win season in program history, posting a .645 wining percentage. Under her direction, Radford's pitching staff ranked ninth in the nation with a 1.12 ERA as the Highlanders made their first-ever appearance in a Big South Championship game.

Assistant Coach Russo enters his third with the St. John's program where he serves as the hitting and catching instructor. Under his guidance, the Red Storm improved its batting average over 20 points, from .250 in 2009 to .272 in 2010. Before joining St. John's Russo was the volunteer assistant coach with local rival Long Island University in Brooklyn, N.Y. Russo is a founder and current board member of the Central Jersey Tornado Girls Fastpitch Softball Organization (CJTSO). The league is a non-profit organization in its seventh year of existence and provides high-level competition for girls at the 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 and under age levels.

She was a three-time NFCA All-American (2006-08), three-time All-Midwest Region first-team honoree (2006-08), four-time All-Big 12 honoree (2006-09) and the 2006 Big 12 Freshman of the Year.
