Softball Signs Two to National Letters of Intent

Santa Clara softball head coach Lisa Mize announced the signing of two players to national letters of intent. Morgana Dallas and Riley McKay will join the Santa Clara softball team in the fall of 2009.

"I am very proud to welcome Morgana and Riley to Santa Clara," said Mize of her first recruiting class. "Both possess great work ethic in the classroom and on the field; they personify the Santa Clara values of student-athletes and we are excited they will be joining the softball program next fall."

Mize on Morgana Dallas: "Morgana is a great competitor and has a never give up attitude. Her knowledge and game sense is a true asset to her game. She is the kind of player that loves to be up to bat with the game on the line, and has a great eye for the ball and bat control."

Mize on Riley McKay: "Riley will be a great addition to the pitching staff and will have an immediate impact on the team. I am really looking forward to working with her to develop in the circle. She is not afraid to be challenged and possesses a great work ethic that will take her to the next level."

Lisa Mize

Head Coach: Santa Clara University

Lisa Mize, the interim head coach since January, 2008 and an assistant coach with the Bronco program two years prior, was named the new head softball coach July 31, 2008.

A 1996 Olympian, Mize brought a wealth of experience with her to Santa Clara. A right-handed pitcher, Mize was a member of the Puerto Rican National Team from 1989-96 and competed in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Collegiately, Mize played for softball power Fresno State in 1993, where she led the Bulldogs to the NCAA Regional Finals. Prior to Fresno State, she played at Colorado State University (1992) and at Chabot College (1990-1991). In 1991, Mize was honored as the California State Pitcher of the Year and helped her squad to the California JUCO Finals.

Her coaching experience includes a three-year stint at Chabot College in Hayward, Calif., where she assisted with the softball program as a volunteer assistant coach from 1993-96.

"I am thrilled for this opportunity and the chance to build the program. Santa Clara softball has a bright future ahead and I am eager to getting started," said Mize. "After spending this past season as the interim head coach we have defined areas of need on the field. We have a strong recruiting class coming in and with that class I look to build for the future. There is an impressive group of student-athletes on the softball team and we have a solid core with good leadership skills that will help us head in the right direction."

Paula Martinez

Assistant Coach Santa Clara University

Paula Martinez begins her third season as an assistant coach for the Santa Clara softball team. A former softball player at California-Berkeley, Martinez will continue to work closely with head coach Lisa Mize on all aspects of the program as Santa Clara softball continues to make a name for itself in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference.

Martinez brings an extensive coaching background, including work with the Lisa Mize Fastpitch Academy. Martinez led nearby Wilcox High School to two league titles and a CCS runner-up finish during her tenure there from 1997-2003. She also spent time as the coach of the San Jose Sting helping them reach the 2004 U16 Nationals. In addition to her work at Santa Clara, she continues to give private hitting instruction and work as an ASA ACE Clinician, while also coaching the Mize Diamonds Gold. Her team reached the Gold Nationals in 2005.

As a player, she was a standout for St. Francis High School before receiving a scholarship to Cal, where she played second base for two seasons. In her second season, the Golden Bears finished third in the Pac-10 and reached the NCAA Regionals in 1993.
