UNCW Begins Van Houten Era

Van Houten takes over the program after three seasons at Georgia State, where she was instrumental in the development of one of the most potent offensive attacks in the nation. As the program's hitting coach, she guided the Panthers to national rankings in numerous offensive categories in 2008, including batting average (.323/6th), runs per game (5.8/14th) and slugging percentage (.475/17th). Van Houten also played a key role in the development of back-to-back CAA Rookie-of-the-Year winners (Danielle Roddy and Catherine Lee) as well as the circuit's first player to win both Player and Rookie-of-the-Year in the same season (Lee).
The Seahawks will be one of the youngest teams in the nation as 16 underclassmen, including 11 freshmen, make up Van Houten's inaugural 19-player roster. In addition, Van Houten will benefit from the experience from a trio of talented upperclassmen in senior Carley Hughes and juniors Michelle Harrison and Morgan Walters. The three players teamed up to start 116 games last season and combined for 107 hits and 60 RBI.
"This is an exciting time for the program as we have a young team that features a lot of potential," said Van Houten. "Our freshmen class has already started to show what its capable of and we are going to look to them to contribute right away. We also have a strong group of returning players, led by senior Carley Hughes, that we are going to count on to provide leadership for our younger players."
