Softball's Royall Named NSCA All-American

The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) recently awarded Samford's Stephanie Royall with its annual All-American Strength and Conditioning Athlete of the Year award - recognizing the right-handed pitcher's dedication to strength and conditioning. Royall was presented the award at Samford's Senior Day presentation on Sunday, May 9.
This year, the NSCA awarded 232 collegiate athletes from 106 schools with this esteemed award. Royall, along with Bulldog basketball player Trey Montgomery, was selected by Samford strength coach Thomas Rohling.
"Stephanie has always been one of the hardest, if not the hardest, working athlete I have ever had the privilege and opportunity to coach," Rohling said. "Despite having had injuries at various junctures in her career, Stephanie always came back in ready to play and perform. Her strength levels always improved from semester to semester and year to year. I will hate to see Stephanie leave."
Royall ranks among the best in just about every pitching category in the Samford softball record books. She became Samford's all-time leader in shutouts with 17 on April 3, when the Bulldogs defeated the College of Charleston, 2-0, on the road. She ranks second in strikeouts with 462 and in wins with 48, and her start at Western Carolina on Sunday, May 2, was the 100th start of her career.
She boasts the fourth lowest ERA in Samford history with a 2.23 overall average. As a freshman, she pitched the first no-hitter of her career when she led the Bulldogs to a critical series sweep of OVC foe Southeast Missouri. In 2007, she was named First-Team All-OVC after ranking second in the conference in shutouts and third in complete games.
In 2008, she earned back-to-back SoCon Pitcher of the Week honors after posting 12 strikeouts in two games against Chattanooga while earning a 6-0 shutout win over the Lady Mocs and recording 10 strikeouts in 18 innings of play against Furman the next week. She has been a continuous member of Samford's Dog Pound Club for her hard work in the weight room.
"The advantages of strength training and conditioning cannot be denied in collegiate athletics," said NSCA Executive Director Robert Jursnick. "These student-athletes attest to this understanding, and are to be applauded for their hard work and dedication."
The NSCA All-American Athlete of the Year Award program is in its 32nd year, and is made possible by a grant from Power Systems, Inc., a Knoxville, Tenn., fitness product leader.
